How a retail group took apart an organized theft network

Kerbside cameras in store parking lots and Kinship resolution turned hundreds of separate theft reports into one investigation and 63 prosecutions.

The challenge

The group’s asset protection team was recording more than 2,000 theft incidents a month across its stores, many of them by the same crews traveling between cities. Each incident was a separate report to a separate police department, and few led anywhere.

What the group did

The group installed Kerbside cameras at the parking lot exits of 212 stores and shared their reads with the local police departments. Its investigators used Concord Commercial to bring incident reports, store video references and Kerbside reads together, and Kinship to resolve the vehicles and people that appeared again and again across its stores.

Results

Within six months the team had linked 1,870 incidents to 14 crews and the resale network that bought from them. It referred the case to a state task force, which charged 63 people. $4.1 million of merchandise was recovered from two storage units and an online resale operation.

We stopped reporting thefts and started investigating a network.
